Privacy Policy for DefineX Chrome Extension
Effective Date: August 11, 2025
What information does DefineX collect?
DefineX does not collect any personally identifiable information, financial data, authentication information, or communications.
The extension only processes the text you select or double-click on web pages to provide definitions, AI-powered meanings, or translations.
How is your data used?
- Selected text is sent to dictionary and AI services (such as Cambridge, Merriam-Webster, and Gemini) to retrieve definitions, meanings, or translations.
- Your preferences (such as dictionary source, target language, and saved words) are stored locally in your browser and are not transmitted to any external server.
- API keys you provide for Gemini, Merriam-Webster, or ElevenLabs are stored locally and used only to access those services.
Data sharing
DefineX does not share, sell, or transfer your personal data to any third parties.
Permissions
DefineX requires certain Chrome permissions to function:
- activeTab, scripting: To display popups and process selected text on web pages.
- contextMenus: To add a right-click “Look up” option.
- storage: To save your preferences and vocabulary locally.
- host permissions: To fetch definitions and translations from dictionary and AI services.
Security
All data processed by DefineX remains on your device, except for selected text sent to dictionary/AI APIs for lookup. API keys are stored locally and never transmitted elsewhere.
